Gavnø Hunting
The hunting is an important part of the cultural inheritance at Gavnø.
The hunting, including stock of game, game preservation and planting out, was in the 19th century introduced by His Excellency, Council President, Lensbaron Kjeld Thor Tage Otto Reedtz-Thott – Knight of the Elephant and Knight of Dannebrog and decorated with the Silver Cross of the Order of the Dannebrogs – who possesed the barony of Gavnø for 61 years. It has formed the basis of the existing stock of game in Gavnø Forest District.
Altogether there are 10 hunting consortiums divided between approx. 1,700 hectares. The consortium are geographcally divided and the grounds therefore vary in sizes from 50 hectares and up to 300 hectares. The let out to consortium and individuals is based on 3-year contracts with terminal date as 1 April. Often it is the same consortium, which prolong the contract for a new period, as consortium is guaranteed the right to prolongation if a complete agreement is reached between the two parties. Day hunting in the fall on ducks, pheasant and partridges is availbable.
The stock of game is good. There is a considerable stock of fallow deer and roe deer, and a smaller stock of red deer. On the island Lindholm, which belongs to Gavnø Estate, there is a smaller stock of moufflons.
Besides hunting preservation, hunting breeding and shooting, the hunting manages a substantial part of Gavnø Estate’s preservation of rural amenities.
There exist substantial scenic-, cultural- and nature values on Gavnø. These values are assigned a greater importance in the daily management and is tried mended and preserved through an incresing part of leaf-caring trees, the preservation of old trees, lay of small ponds etc.
